Armed Security Guards

carry a firearm on their person when conducting their duties on the contracted property. Although a security guard may be armed they also have non-lethal self defense items like O/C spray, asps or stun guns.

Security guards are usually armed in high risk locations like banks or government building because of the increased risk due to the financial or intellectual property housed in the building.

Armed security guards have an additional amount of training and certification through SLED than unarmed security guards and are trained in the use of deadly weapons.

Unarmed Security Guards

are the most common type of security guard. Although they are not armed with a firearm, in most cases they do have non-lethal defensive weapons like O/C spray, asps or stun guns.

The type of weapons that security guards carry with them while on duty is usually chosen based on the location and the needs or wants of the client. All unarmed security guards are certified and licensed through SLED after thorough background checks and training.

Unarmed security guards are usually stationed in places like stores, communities and other low risk locations where the need for armed security guards is not warranted.

Uniformed Security Guards

wear a uniform that is highly marked with the word security, and easily identifies the person as a security guard.

A duty uniform will usually consist of tactical type BDU pants, a duty uniform shirt and a hat, similar to what local police officers wear. This type uniform is the more visual type that is designed to immediately identify the person as a security guard, usually worn by security guards at a retail location, communities or office building.

A casual uniform will usually consisting of a professionally marked polo shirt, BDU pants and no hat. It is designed so that the person can be identified and marked as a security guard but does not "stand out in a crowd". This type of uniform is usually worn by security guards in a more casual environment like a special event, concert or nightclub.

Plain-clothed Guards

are usually armed. This type of security guard is not easily identifiable as a security guard, wears no immediately identifiable markings and is usually dressed in jeans and a t-shirt or slacks and a button-up shirt.

Security guards in plain clothes are usually used when the client wants a security guard presence but does not want their clients and customers to know they are using security guards.

This type uniform allows security guards to observe and protect but not be noticed.

Static/Patrol Guards

Static guards are usually stationed at a specific location and stay in that location or seldom make rounds. Security officers are usually stationed at check-in gates or guard shack and their duties are to stay at the same post for most if not all of their shift.

Security patrol guards are constantly mobile, making rounds, checking doors and windows, securing the whole of the property by being mobile and patrolling regularly.

Security patrol guards stay in one area for a short amount of time and are regularly patrolling the property. Security patrol guards are used at housing complexes, retail locations and special events.

Personal Protection

also know as bodyguards are stationed to protect a specific person or group of persons.

Usually personal protection guards are used for highly recognizable and important persons such as musicians, politicians and celebrities.

Personal protection may be needed for persons carrying large amounts of cash, politicians giving speeches or celebrity appearances.
